This course explores how children grow and develop. Students will research popular and sound theories concerning the developing child from conception through age 6. Learning about children, conception, fetal development, labor and delivery, genetic disorders, and infant, toddler, preschool and school-aged care are also addressed. Students will look at the importance of creating optimum social, emotional, physical and intellectual environments to enhance a child’s quality of life. Students will also explore children’s behaviors, growing minds and bodies, personalities and the importance of the family unit. Students will investigate positive parenting and discipline practices, child abuse issues and ways to assist growth through positive parenting practices. FCCLA is the student leadership component integrated into this class.
